How to Coupon at JoAnn Fabrics–NEVER Pay Full Price Again!!

Joann.com
I’m pretty sure the cashiers at JoAnn’s see me coming and try to time it just right so that they don’t have to ring me out. That’s right, I’m a branded couponista, and they know it! Eh, it probably doesn’t help that I’m in the store 1-2 times a week…Anyway, I’ve come to know the ins and outs of their store coupon policy pretty well. Believe it or not, I can honestly say, I haven’t paid full price for ANYTHING in 2 years. Did I mention I LOVE coupons?!?

COUPONING at JOANN FABRICS 101

#1. Gather up as many JoAnn store coupons as possible! If you have a particular project in mind, odds are, you will be buying multiple items. You can use ONE “% off any item coupon” for EVERY regularly-priced item you buy as long as they all have DIFFERENT BARCODES! Now, the barcode rule is important!! You CANNOT grab the entire stack of weekly ads (usually located by the entrance of the store) and cut out 20 weekly 40% off coupons. They will all have the same barcode, and therefore, will be unusable. Not to mention that it’s typically frowned upon and will not be making you any friends with the other patrons in the store who were hoping to snag at least one meager coupon.

To do this AND play by the rules, you will have to get your coupons from multiple sources…
  • Check your Sunday paper for their weekly ad.
  • Join their MAILING LIST. Sign up for text alerts while you’re there!
  • Sign up for their MOBILE APP.
  • Print their weekly ONLINE COUPON or send it to your phone.

If you’ve successfully acquired coupons from all of the above sources, you will now have enough coupons to get 4 regularly-priced items 40-50% off!! But, did I mention…they also accept COMPETITOR’S coupons!?!

#2. Using Competitor’s coupons is a breeze, again, as long as you follow the rules. They will accept Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Hancock, etc. for basic craft items. HOWEVER, if the competitor in question (i.e. Michaels) doesn’t sell fabric, the coupon CANNOT be used to buy fabric. Make sense? NOTE: JoAnn’s will NOT accept a “% off your total purchase” from a competitor and you can only use ONE coupon from each local competing store. For instance, I have a Michaels and  a Hobby Lobby relatively close by, so my coupon binder will always include a single coupon from each of those stores. A few good sources for competitor’s coupons;
  • Check your Sunday paper for weekly ads.
  • Print an online coupon from Michaels or have it sent directly to your phone. If you get a Michaels ad in your Sunday paper, there’s no need to print because you can only use ONE.
  • Print an online coupon from Hobby Lobby.
  • Print an online coupon from Hancock Fabrics. (Can use on FABRICS!! Yaaaay!!)
*Don’t see your local stores listed? A simple Google search of “Store name + coupons” will usually get you what you’re looking for.
#3. Have your eye on something that’s already on sale? It gets better!! This is when you’ll want to use that awesome “% off your TOTAL purchase’' coupon. Make sure it says at the bottom, “Includes regular- & sale-priced items.” Does it??? Then, you’re all set to get some AMAZING SAVINGS!!

#4. JoAnn Fabrics also offers some awesome discount programs! Sign up today to start saving!

  • Teacher Rewards – Save 15% on every purchase. (Must present valid license and ID).
  • Student Discount – Save 10% off every purchase for students 14+. (Must present Student ID, College acceptance letter, or report card).
  • VIP Discount – Save 10% off every purchase. Eligible for Vendors, Craft organizations, and Interior Design Professionals. (Must present vendor’s license, tax ID, State ID, membership card, or professional certification).
  • Non-Profit Discount – Save 10% on every purchase. Eligible for organizations with a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit tax status. (Must present proof of 501(c)(3) and state ID).

#5. BONUS for Giant Eagle shoppers!! As of today (1/20/2014) they are selling these gift card 2-packs. It's a $60 value, but you only have to pay $50 out-of-pocket PLUS you'll earn your $0.10 in fuel perks ($3 value when you buy 30 gallons of gas). That's a whopping 26% savings before you even step foot inside the store!! WOOT!

HAPPY COUPONING ;)

  5. My problem always is that the "regularly priced" item always turns out to be on sale and I am not permitted to use my coupon. Has anyone figured out what dollar amounts denote "regular price" items and which dollar amounts denote "sale price" or "discounted price" items?
Thank you for these tips. I am going to bookmark this page for future reference.

    1. Be sure you look closely at the weekly ad and check the signage above what you're picking up. If something is on sale for, say 15% off, I will actually wait until it's no longer "on sale" because I know that I can get it cheaper with the 40% off coupon. Also, that would be a good time to use the "% off your total purchase" coupon because you can get the sale price plus get an additional percentage off. I hope that makes sense! Keep in mind that items go on sale in cycles. If you miss it the first time around, it WILL go on sale again!!

    2. I am assuming that you have the Jo-Ann fabrics app on your phone you can always use their price check and scan the barcode and it'll bring up that item and it'll tell you if it's on sale or not that way as well. I hope I hope everyone had a great day!!

  6. I also found out patterns are pricey, and if watch in their flyer, you can get the patterns for a little over $2.00 a pattern.

  7. I never buy patterns unless they are on sale. You can get 10 at a time, just visit the store more then once during the sale, you usally don't need coupons for pattern sales.

  9. JoAnn's also price matches. If a competitor has the same item on sale, you just have to show proof of the discounted price and they will match it. You cannot use another discount on that price-matched item though.

  11. Do they allow you both use coupons and get the student discount?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, but you will want to use the 40-50% off coupons on regular-priced items, so present those to your cashier first. Then, you can hand over your student discount to get your extra 10% savings on sale items.

      Delete
  12. I do the same thing! I rarely pay full price for anything at JoAnn's. I have 3 different email addresses and have all of them receive the JoAnn's emails as the will all have unique barcodes. Be mindful that when texting the coupon to your mobile phone from the website, the code will always be the same so you can only do it once per coupon cycle. On the emailed coupons, if you have a smartphone that displays the barcode, you don't even have to print them, they will just scan your phone just like with the mobile app.

Also, if you're a member of the Quilter's Club of America ($29.95 per year) you qualify for the 10% off reg/sale purchases card. You also get 4 issues of Easy Quilts Magazine, so it's worth the membership fee for the extra savings. I save way more than the membership fee in a year of additional discounts.

    2. I work at JoAnn's and this actually happened once in the two-point-five years I've worked there. It's the WEIRDEST, MOST RANDOM fluke. They should have allowed you to use all of the coupons and done it manually. If this every happens to anyone and the cashier won't allow you to use them, POLITELY say, "Hey, it's random. But they're all from different places. Please honor my coupons. I believe you can apply them manually." If the cashier won't let you then ask to talk to a manager. BE POLITE please you have no idea how rude and entitled people can get. Yes you're entitled to use multiple coupons but you're not entitled to be rude to cashiers and managers. (That is of course if the coupons are legit DON'T YOU DARE try to create your own coupons. I only say that because someone WILL. I've had scammers and you know what they just need to get a life.)

  18. So I would be able to use the coupon online, the instore coupon, the preferred customer coupon from my email, and my phone coupon as long as the barcodes are all different? Plus I can use a Hobby Lobby coupon, a Michaels coupon and a Hancock fabric coupon, All at the same time? It seems too good to be true.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Joann's will match an online current price if you show them proof ( print online add or show on smartphone) but they can not use an online coupon because it does not have a numerical barcode.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm not sure about other stores, but my store (Citrus Park, FL) allows multiples of competitor coupons as well, as long as they're all different barcodes. So you could use 2 Jo-Ann coupons and 2 Michaels, etc. I would recommend trying to use multiple competitors coupons until you find out that you can't! Wouldn't want to miss out on that extra savings, just in case your store allows it like mine does. :)

I wish I could just hand this blog post to customers that come through my line at work! I try to explain the awesomeness of our coupon policy but everyone just wants to get through and get out. This is just a great article!!

  21. Hi, I know when I worked at JoAnns a year ago, there was no rule on how many competitor coupons you could use. The same rules applied though, that the bar codes could not be the same. So it works the same way, online coupons, app coupons, mailer coupons, as long as they did not have the same code! For example:
    Joanns online coupon
    Joanns app coupon
    Joanns mailer coupon
    Joanns newspaper coupon
    Michaels newspaper coupon
    Michaels mailer coupon
    Michaels online coupon
    AC Moore newspaper coupon
    AC Moore mailer coupon
    AC Moore online coupon
    Hobby Lobby online coupon
    Hobby Lobby newspaper coupon
    Hobby Lobby mailer coupon.......ETC

^^^ These can ALL be used in the same transaction if they all have different codes and there is only ONE transaction discount coupon (% off total purchase, even if it is % off crafts/fabric/frames). But it is correct that Joanns will not except coupons on items that Michaels, AC Moore, etc do not sell (i.e. fabric). Happy shopping!

    1. Please note that multiple competitor coupons is incorrect - one per competitor. Multiple JA coupons with different barcodes are fine.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yes! You can even use it again that same day. I just open up my phone, show them the email and they scan the barcode or barcodes if I got several email coupons that week.

      Delete
    2. NO. Stefanie is wrong or incorrectly interpreting your question. If it's Monday's coupon that ends in 101 with your name on it NO it can't be used twice. Personal coupons are a one-time use. Multiple uses will eventually be found out and your emails will stop. If you come in on Friday/Saturday with six/seven coupons (101, 102, etc through 107) then YES you can use all of them in one transaction.

  24. Can I combine student discount with coupons

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can use them at the same time, but on different items. The %off coupons are usually for one full priced item, and the student discount is for both sale and full price (but can't be used for remnants and a few other things).

      Delete
  25. you actually CAN use multiple coupons- like the 40%off one regular item coupon...get as many coupons as you can use and when you get to counter, instead of buying everything at once and only able to use the coupon for ONE item, tell them you want each item rung up as a separate sale; and then you can use one coupon for each purchase, :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. I used 8 different 60% off coupons today for 8 skeins of yarn. Some were even the same color. Like she said, as long as they are all different barcode numbers, they can scan them all and take off 60% off each of the full priced items. I had a few coupons I printed from emails, two from text messages, and one from their app. I had one item I bought that was a sale item, so the coupons wouldn't work on it--I just showed them my student Joann card and got an extra 10% off. Also, for the coupons, check more than the last 3 numbers. I had a few that all ended with 605, for example, but the numbers right before those three were different, so they were considered different coupons.

  27. When do the new coupons come out? There are coupons ending this Saturday and yet there are sales starting this Sunday. Thank you!

  28. I have noticed sometimes there are on-line sales on Joann's website that aren't in the store but the manager at my local Joann will honor the on-line price. Never hurts to ask!

  29. I used a combo of six coupons from both JoAnn's and Michaels, last year, all with different barcodes and they were accepted just like you wrote about. The cashier looked at me a little cross-eyed, but she rang it all up and I saved a fortune. I came in the following week and JoAnn's changed their policy-- one coupon only, just like Michaels. Do you happen to know if this is a corporate policy or if this is a change made on a local level? Thanks.

    1. As far as I know, I must be a local change. My local Joann's still accepts multiple :(

  33. Rules state that you can only accept one coupon per competitor (so only one Michaels and one AC Moore...), and there are a number of products that coupons should not be applied to, but the system is not designed to catch this so if you get a cashier who doesn't know the rules, you may get away with it.

I also used one of the JoAnn's coupons at Michael's and got an additional 20% off compared to using Michael's 40% coupon (the current offer). It is this awesome! You can easily find coupons from different sites and get a few with different codes and use them all in one transaction. Use the coupons from the store that offers a higher discount at the other stores and you can really save a lot of money! I wonder though, if you have any idea how often they run the 60% coupon?

  36. Michaels will give a senior discount too. I wonder if Joanne's will. I will have to ask. Thanks for the blog. I will be using multiple coupons now.

    1. Supposedly Senior Citizen Day is every quarter on a Wednesday. Corporate has decided not to advertise it like they used to ("bagger" ads, the little fliers we stuff in your bag) so keep an eye out on the emails, website, newspaper flyer, and personal flyers for when. I say "supposedly" because there was an instance when it took place about two weeks later.

      Delete
  37. Joanns does have senior discounts, but they are designated during the month. Its advertised in the store, sometimes hanging out flyers the week before. Also there is a military discount all of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  38. FYI: when patterns are on sale for $1 or $1.99 at JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby or Hancock it is sometimes hard to find the one(s) you need. Take the ad to WalMart and they will honor the price. I have done this numerous times in different WalMarts. Also, I used a JoAnn's ad that said buy one Simplicity rotary cutting machine and get another Simplicity craft machine for free. WalMart honored that also. Saved about $60.00 with that ad when they were sold out at JoAnn's.

  44. I have been to Joann a few times with my wife a couple times recently and I know there are always coupons on line that are easy to find. They seem to be playing a game though. Last time we went the item she wanted was on an "unadvertised" sale. Unadvertised meaning the sale price was not reflected on the peg we pulled the item off, there was no sign around the rack of items saying there was a sale nor any signage we could see anyplace in the store. So she got 15% off the price marked on the peg the product came off of, instead of the 40% from the coupon.

This seems a lot like bait and switch to me, or we should have been given the option to pay the higher price and use our coupon.

Oddly enough they got her ire up more than mine and she said she will not be back. We have many craft stores in the area and they all take each otehrs coupons so we will use our J 40% off coupons at the M store or the HL store moving forward.

    1. This has happened to me too! And very conveniently for them, there are no price checkers in the store for customers to check prices before standing forever in line. Boo, Joann!

    1. No, as the blog's author has mentioned as as the coupons say, one transaction total per purchase. Transaction total coupons do not stack.

      Delete
  46. Someone people asked when the 20% off total purchase or 50%/60% coupons come out. Those are hard to judge. Usually there's at least one 20% otp a month. Sometimes there's a pattern to the promotions and sometimes it seems super random. I feel like there have been a TON more 50%/60% this year vs. last year. It's unknown. Please don't even ask to speak to a manager about when promotions happen. They don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I've seen several "how JA coupons work" and since no one has said this I'm gonna. You CANNOT print off multiple of the online coupon and ask to do multiple transactions. The coupons says that it must be surrendered at the time of the transaction. It's a one time use. It does NOT mean multiple transactions. One person trying to use it for multiple transactions is wrong. But bringing in a friend/so/OLDER child (like 9+) and having THEM use the coupon SEPARATE from your transaction is a loop hole that's allowed. It's frowned upon because hey there are SO MANY offers to get coupons but also if you only visit three times a year then yeah you don't want annoying promotions.

Seriously though I love the fact that the blog's owner and everyone who has commented is extremely nice and kind and not a single bit of hate or rage or anything.

  48. I don't know if it was mentioned way far up in the comments, but there are 2 additional ways to get coupons now.

1.Text Message- to sign up, send a text message to 56266 with the word COUPON. Your first coupon for signing up will be a 20% off your total purchase. After that you will receive up to 5 coupons a month from text messages.

2.Customer Survey- When you shop at JoAnn's, near the bottom of your receipt with be a website to go to and take their customer survey about your visit. For doing this survey, they will give you a 50% off one regular-priced item coupon. So there's a way to always get an easy 50% off coupon, especially if you're in there pretty often like I am.

    ReplyDelete
  49. FYI----You CANNOT use a percent off total purchase coupon or any other percent off total purchase (Teacher Discount, Military Discount, VIP discount, Student Discount) in addition with any item you used a coupon on. For instance, if you use any 40%, 50% or 60% off any item that is not on sale, you will not get an additional total percent off that item. And PLEASE let the cashier know you have coupons before you begin to have your purchase rang up. It makes it much easier for them to pay attention to what items may not be on sale. One other thing, you CANNOT pass your phone to the person with you in order for that person to use the same coupon you just used. They are also cracking down on the use of screen shot coupons, you should go to the website or your email and get the coupon.
